Heather Benjamin

On Friday September 21, Muddguts will celebrate the opening of Cavegirl Monologue, a collection of Heather Benjamin’s newest illustrations and paintings. The show will also serve as

a release party for her new, full-color book of the same name... (published by Sacred Bones). While Benjamin’s oeuvre examines both the trauma and hybridity of bodies gendered as female, Cavegirl Monologues serves as a departure from her earlier and more abject work by touching on themes of self-discovery and self-actualization.

Fundamentally shaped by a strong punk ethos, Benjamin began making flyers for shows in 2007 and started releasing her first zine, Sad Sex, around this time. She credits working with Printed Matter in her late teens as a powerful glimpse into self-publishing.

While she has expanded her practice to include more rarefied pieces..... zines and photocopies remain integral to her practice as an artist and help to inform her larger and more precious works. Her show at Muddguts will include larger-scale works alongside prints and photocopies of her drawings, many of which she made as an artist-in-residency at Ken Kesey’s Oregon farm.

Heather lives and works in New York.
